The Inca-trail, Peru. First glimpse of the mysterious Machu Picchu from Intipunku after 4 days hiking the Inca-trail. Machu Picchu was re-discovered by young Yale University graduate Hiram Bingham on July 24 1911. He named the ruins Machu Picchu because that was the name of the mountain on which they were found. Machu means old or big and Picchu is the name of the area. Why the Incas build it remains unknown but there are several theories about it. Altitude 2500m. Machu Picchu, Peru. Accurately carved stone blocks lock together in mortarless walls. This is a perfect example of the famous and characteristic Inca architecture - Machu Picchu, Peru.
